The Start of Senior Year

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

School is 27 days away, but field hockey started yesterday. Fifty seven girls and lots of running, but Caitlin is happy. For one thing she felt like she was in better shape than most of the others. Today is another sweltering day, but the temperatures will only be in the mid not high 90s.

Kids to Camp

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Our family dinners are smaller these days as we are losing kids to camp. Last week Caitlin went to field hockey camp and this week John is at boy scout camp. It was Caitlin’s third year at the same camp and John’s first year at Goshen so our comfort levels with them being gone are […]

Last Game

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

On a sunny afternoon or fall evening turf fields are great – smooth and fast so they make for a better field hockey game because the ball rolls where you send it with no bad bounces. However, the flaw in the turf fields is that no matter how cold, wet, and windy the weather is, […]

My Soccer Team

Friday, October 9th, 2009

While we rarely win a game, we have a good time. Many have played with me since they were five and they are really a nice group of kids with a great group of parents.

The View from the Press Box

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Scotty has spent his home field hockey games looking down from above.

His volunteer job for the team is to announce the games so he spends them in the press box looking through binoculars and announcing who scored a goal. Plus plays the national anthem, announces the starting lineups, encourages people to go to the […]

Pre Dawn Cheer

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Caitlin has just pulled out of the driveway for her 7:00 am field hockey practice. For some reason you have to be there at 6:30. Now we are used to the requirement for arriving at practice 15 minutes early. Last year’s coach always said, “If you are on-time you are late.”
I think the 15 minute […]

School Preview

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Fairfax County schools may not start for a couple of more weeks yet, but you couldn’t tell that by the crowds at the school we visited for Caitlin’s field hockey scrimmage yesterday. We arrived at Thomas Jefferson HS to find lots of cars and buses. The football team was scrimmaging as well and those players […]

Start of a Season

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Field hockey practice began on Tuesday even though our schools don’t start until September 8th. So far the new coach looks like a keeper - there had been much apprehension about her since her hiring and meeting with the girls last spring. She had promised two-a-days in August and sent out a detailed and challenging […]

Field Hockey Camp

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

“Putting on a clinic” is such a sports cliché, but I saw it in action Saturday when I picked up Caitlin and her friends from field hockey camp at VCU. With crisp passes to perfectly placed players the white team just dominated the black team. Maintaining their triangle formation that coaches love to talk about, […]

Great Day for Soccer

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Today is almost perfect for soccer - all players available, temperature in the low 80s, perfect blue skies, lush green fields. Well, actually the fields are lush with standing water so we can’t play. After a week inside because of all the rain I’m sure everyone is really ready to play, especially because the weather […]
