Day After Thanksgiving in DC

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

We (the Deans and us with a meet-up with Frank) ventured down to the National Mall (as opposed to a shopping mall) the day after Thanksgiving. Our destination was the just reopened National Museum of American History. It was a lot of other peoples’ destination as well and by the time Jeff, Caroline, and I […]

Drafting a Team

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Scotty attended the 8 – 9 boys basketball draft on Saturday and came home with a pretty good team. Well, we hope it is a pretty good team. And if not, it does contain some friends of John’s and some parents whom I’ll enjoy talking with. By next season he’ll know exactly who to pick […]

Trying to Stimulate the Economy II

Friday, November 21st, 2008

I’ve also been trying to get Lowes to take my money. We’ve decided to replace the counter top and vanity in the upstairs bathroom and are at the point of placing the order. But my week went like this.
Monday: The contractor comes and measures. So far so good.
Wednesday: I go to Lowes to place […]

Trying to Stimulate the Economy I

Friday, November 21st, 2008

I keep trying to stimulate the economy. All week I’ve been trying to purchase Egypt Air tickets for Scotty, Caitlin, and John but the website keeps saying the payment didn’t go through and sends me back to the beginning. Several calls to the Egypt Air ticket office have produced the following:
Calling Monday afternoon to explain […]

On Buying Stuff

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

This article stuck in my mind because it reflects my current feeling about buying things. The author writes about deciding not to buy a coffee maker and the larger ramifications.
“But ultimately even the bargain didn’t seduce me. My mind followed an unfamiliar path. I thought of all the coffee makers we already have, and […]

Touch Base

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Parent-teacher conferences at the high school level are quick two minute affairs held in the gym. The teachers sit in alphabetical order at tables lining the walls of the cafeteria and face long lines of parents. Or short lines if you have a teacher who talks quickly or has students with uninterested parents.
If you […]

Burned Out

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Much as I loved yesterday’s results I think even I have had enough of the election. But things I liked looking at or reading today are (and yes, they tend to be from the media elite):
The New York Times bubble map. Use the left hand menu to view the Bubble Map and the County Leaders […]

Election Day 8:32 p.m.

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Pennsylvania is making me feel better. But Virginia is too close to call so I feel worse again. I’m hoping around of poll closings at 9:00 will help. Obama’s been stuck at 103 electoral votes for awhile now. Having every major news website open on my computer screen doesn’t actually make the news faster.

Election Day 7:18 p.m.

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Caitlin says that staring at the TV will not change the outcome and I should just go to bed.
I’m too busy trying to calculate in my head that if 21% of the voters in Virginia were black and 95% of them voted for Obama and 58% of white voters voted for McCain, can Obama […]

Election Day 6:47

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

The girls and John have returned and TV has gotten interesting.
They had a good time on their free food for voting stickers run. Krispy Kreme had run out of the special election doughnuts so they got their free choice of doughnuts for having voted. Then it was on to Ben and Jerry’s where they […]
