Superbowl Predictions

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

For me, tomorrow’s Superbowl is all about the 12 minutes of half time when Bruce Springsteen plays. The rest is all superfluous, although I’m sure I’ll enjoy the commercials. And maybe the game.
I first began following football during the Steeler’s reign in the 70’s. Between the Steel Curtain and Mean Joe Green it is hard […]

Whirlwind Trip to London

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Saturday afternoon as I headed for the plane I was sure that flying to London for a long weekend was a really ridiculous thing to do. By Sunday afternoon I changed my mind. By that time John, Meg, and I had met Scotty, Caitlin, and the other John Stewart at the airport, dropped our luggage […]

Not Much from Egypt

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

It is a good thing I’ve been getting some details from Louise about my family in Egypt. I’m blaming jetlag and Scotty is blaming Caroline for hogging the computer. But the news I get is all very, very positive.
The picture on Louise’s blog was taken at the Saqqara (the Step Pyramids). As was this:

I […]

Analyzing the Crowd

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

I’ve enjoyed zooming in and scrolling the satellite image of the Inauguration. I hope that official counters realized that a lot more people were coming to the Mall. You can see the mass in the streets.
I’m sure Bobby will agree with me that the crowd near the Lincoln Memorial shown in the photo was […]

Goodbye to Bush

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

As we walked along the river we heard a single helicopter. Bobby correctly pegged it as the one carrying Bush. I was surprised at the lack of escort, but things have changed for him. It made its lonely way down the river for a bit and then turned north to fly to Andrews.

Walking II - 12:35 to 1:30

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Mindful of the subway and the crowds and the trip in as soon as Obama finished his speech people around us hopped up and started heading out. That seemed like a smart idea so we did too. From the Lincoln Memorial the only logical choice was the Memorial Bridge so we walked that - the […]

A Back Row to History - 11:30 - 12:30

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Initially I thought the ideal place to watch Obama’s inauguration would be from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial because of all the symbolism. Then I realized just how far it was from the capitol (1.9 miles) and that the Washington Monument really makes a better door than a window so we had planned on […]

The World War II Memorial - 11:00

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

At the edge of the Monument grounds two large jumbotrons are set up and one massive crowd stares up at them. We edge around and keep edging until the logical thing is to go into the World War II Memorial. This proves to be an almost idea spot. Almost because while we manage a spot […]

The Washington Monument - 10:30

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

We feel like we’ve finally arrived, but in fact are a long way from it. We entered the Washington Monument grounds from the Lincoln Memorial side. At that point from our side there was plenty of clear space and a big jumbotron where we could have stake out a spot to watch from. But we […]

Walking I - 9:30 to 10:30

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

We are aiming for the Washington Monument. Bobby’s friend Quat and his family are already in position right in front of it. We flow along with the river of people, first down H then left down 18th. It is a good thing that the streets are closed as we fill it from sidewalk to sidewalk. […]
