Pine Wood Derby Day

Well, perhaps the car was over raced the night before. Or perhaps we should have put some glue on the axels to stabilize them. The rear tire that I’d been worried about was pretty wiggly by the end of day Not that it really matters. The car came in fourth in speed, but was second in style so we went home happy. As did most boys. All they seemed to want to do was watch the cars a bit, vote on style, and then play, play, play fortunately mostly outside.

The high point of the racing portion was the unbreakable tie for second in the pack. Because of track bias, a tie breaker consists of two runs so that each car has a turn on both lanes. After five or six rounds of the cars alternating wins based on the lane an overall tie was declared. Which by that point was what everyone wanted.

The entire event was smoothly run and a lot of fun, but my favorite part was Excel spreadsheet that was used for the scoring. In her blog Louise bemoaned the irritating features of Excel, but this spreadsheet was amazing. It listed all the boys, the heats, the order of finish for each heat, total points scored, and as soon as the last heat was run for a den, the results. Plus it was all color coded. All the guy working the spreadsheet had to do was record first, second, and third for each heat and the results would pop up. Apparently a dad had designed this seven years ago and he tweaks it every year. It made the entire day run smoothly and removed all questions and arguments.
