A Ski Day

The recent spate of cold weather corresponded nicely Fairfax County’s annual two-day teacher workday break from school so Caitlin, John, and I headed off to Liberty for a day of skiing yesterday. The most exciting part of the day occurred when John slid off the chair lift while trying to get on and I jumped off after him and pulled him out of the way. We were only about two feet off the ground at that point so it wasn’t much of a jump and the operators were very helpful and kind. Especially the one who I’d been chatting with instead of focusing on John getting on the lift. But he hadn’t had one problem all day so I hadn’t expected him to.

While over all it was a good day, the skiing wasn’t as great as it should have been because:

  • There was lots and lots of snow making which meant that instead of silent, peaceful rides up the mountain you couldn’t really talk because of all the noise.
  • Real snow fell for awhile which may seem cool, but it is really annoying to have snow stinging your face so badly you want to close your eyes which isn’t a good plan when you are skiing.
  • Liberty is full of long, easy slopes which became fairly boring. As Caitlin explained she just wasn’t getting any adrenalin rush. Although she may have when we tried the back side of the mountain and some more difficult runs. But on the front side there was no escaping the long gentle, runs toward the bottom.
  • Lunch for three cost $29.32.
  • On the other hand I started thinking it would be great for us to try skiing in Colorado because we all enjoyed the trip together. Even the part where Caitlin was in charge of the Ipod and played the first 15 seconds of each song. This may be okay when you are doing it, but try listening to it when someone else is in control. But the battery died and after that we had an excellent time chatting.

The back side of Liberty is deffinitely more intersting than the front side.
